Two portions, scored apart
TDLR’s electrician exam page says that starting March 11, 2025, the journeyman electrician exam is two parts: a knowledge portion and a calculations portion. The candidate information bulletin TDLR links for the English journeyman exam is the PSI bulletin.
That bulletin lists NEC Knowledge as 59 items, including 3 non-scored items, with 130 minutes, and Calculations as 26 items, including 2 non-scored items, with 110 minutes. Each portion needs 70% correct to pass. Time left on the first portion does not roll into the next one. PSI says the non-scored items are not scored, and that time to answer them is already in the time allowed.
Fee and a retake
TDLR’s exam page points to the candidate bulletin for the fee. The PSI bulletin lists a $78 journeyman electrician examination fee for both portions. If you fail a portion or both portions, the retake fee listed there is also $78.
TDLR says a score of 70% or better is required to pass, and that you may retake until you pass. You may have to pay another examination fee each time. Confirm the current fee on the bulletin before you schedule. This page is a citation, not PSI’s cashier.
What you can carry in
The exam is open book. You bring your own National Electrical Code. TDLR’s exam page and the PSI bulletin both name the 2026 edition. The bulletin, updated September 15, 2026, says the examinations are referenced to the 2026 NEC effective September 1, 2026.
Both pages say any soft-bound edition may be used, and that questions are based on the current TDLR-adopted bound edition. Loose-leaf, spiralbound, and ring-bound copies are not allowed. The PSI bulletin also says the NEC Handbook is not allowed, permanent tabs from the book publisher are allowed, and homemade tabs are not. You may highlight or note the book before the session. You may not mark it during the session. PSI provides an electronic notepad.
You still need a valid government-issued photo ID with your signature and date of birth. TDLR says the name has to match the file exactly. A driver’s license, state ID, or passport can do that. This page does not reprint code text or code tables. If this page and the bulletin disagree, use the bulletin and the book you are allowed to carry.
Those pass rates are not a promise
TDLR’s Fiscal Year 2025 (year total) table shows Journeyman NEC at 24.46%: 1,402 passed, 4,329 failed, 5,731 scored attempts, and 483 no-shows. Journeyman Calculations is 20.56%: 1,301 passed, 5,027 failed, 6,328 scored attempts, and 499 no-shows.
TDLR’s Tot column is the scored attempts, pass plus fail. No-shows sit in their own column and are not inside that rate. These are TDLR’s figures for that fiscal year. They are not a forecast for you, and they are not a result from this practice bank.
