Washington · DOL knowledge tests
160 free questions across 8 endorsements, 20 in each section. CDL Full Access is $19/month and opens the other 1640 questions, for every endorsement, not $10 each. Air brakes, combination, hazmat, tank, doubles, passenger, and school bus are included with general knowledge.
These are the Department of Licensing knowledge-test page, the commercial learner permit page, and the Commercial Driver Guide, not a promise about how anyone scores. You need a valid Washington driver license. You are at least 18, and at least 21 to drive from state to state. Confirm the knowledge-test fee before you pay. This site does not issue the permit.
DOL prints the question counts and the passing scores: general knowledge 40 of 50, combination 16 of 20, passenger 16 of 20, air brakes 20 of 25, school bus 16 of 20, doubles and triples 16 of 20, tank 16 of 20, and hazmat 24 of 30. That is the 80% line in 49 CFR 383.135. Doubles, triples, and tank do not need a skills test, unless you train or take the skills test in a tank vehicle. The sets on this site use that line. They are not DOL forms, and this site does not publish a pass rate.
DOL says the knowledge test is offered in English, Spanish, Russian, and Serbo-Croatian. Interpreters are not allowed. You make an appointment at a driver licensing office that gives the test. The fee covers one attempt at each knowledge test taken within 90 days of the receipt. The Commercial Driver Guide says the skills test is in English only, and an interpreter is prohibited. You pass the knowledge tests before the CLP, and again when you upgrade to a higher class or add an endorsement that needs a skills test.
The permit is valid for 180 days and can be renewed once, if you renew within 30 days of the expiration. Knowledge scores for the permit follow that same window. Doubles, triples, and hazmat results do not renew with the permit. They expire 180 days from the day you passed. The guide says you hold the CLP at least 14 days before the skills test for that vehicle and those endorsements. A CDL holder sits beside you. DOL says that driver needs the endorsements for the vehicle, two years on that type of vehicle, and five years of driving in all.
Getting a CDL runs from the knowledge test to the CLP, then the training DOL requires for that class, then a skills test. DOL schedules the skills test after it has notice that the training is complete. Hazmat training has to be on your record before the hazmat knowledge test, and TSA still does the threat assessment. The guide lists the skills test as vehicle inspection, basic vehicle control, and on-road driving, in that order, in a representative vehicle. DOL also says applicants wait 24 hours after a passed skills test before the CDL is issued. DOL says it has stopped non-domicile CLP and CDL transactions, and it has stopped knowledge and skills testing for non-domiciled drivers. Read the current page before you go. One Pass Prep is not on the Training Provider Registry. This subscription is not an ELDT course and it does not replace the skills test.
One Pass Prep is not affiliated with the Washington State Department of Licensing or FMCSA. This site does not issue a Washington CLP or CDL.
20 free questions in each endorsement. Answers stay hidden until you submit. The line on these sets is 80%, which is the written-test line in 49 CFR 383.135. A score here is not a pass rate. The counts on each card are the free set and the original questions in that section.
