New York · DMV knowledge tests
160 free questions across 8 endorsements, 20 in each section. CDL Full Access is $19/month and opens the other 280 starter questions, for every endorsement, not $10 each. Air brakes, combination, hazmat, tank, doubles, passenger, and school bus are included with general knowledge.
These are the DMV’s steps for a commercial permit and road test, not a promise about how anyone scores. DMV lists a $10 application fee that covers the written tests taken at the same time, an extra $5 for a required test taken later, and a $40 road-test fee due before you can schedule. Confirm the amounts. This site does not issue the permit.
DMV says you already need a New York driver license (Class D, Class E, or non-CDL Class C) before the CDL permit test. Class A is the tractor-trailer, Class B is a bus or single-unit truck, and Class C is a smaller truck, bus, or stretch limo that still needs a CDL. Study the sections of the Commercial Driver’s Manual (CDL-10) that match that class. Permit tests are given only at DMV offices.
DMV says the written tests for CDL Class A, Class B, and Class C, and for endorsements, are available in English, Spanish, Chinese, and Russian only. The hazardous materials endorsement test is available in English only. You pay the application fee before the tests. For an original Class A or B permit you also certify your license history for the last 10 years and that you meet the federal medical rules. This site does not publish a pass rate.
DMV says you cannot schedule a road-test appointment for a date within 14 days of when the learner permit was issued. You practice with a supervising driver who is licensed for that commercial vehicle. Sections 11 through 13 of CDL-10 cover the pre-trip inspection, basic vehicle control, and the on-road test. DMV says the pre-trip can start at the front, in the middle, or, on a Class A vehicle, with the trailer. An unmarked vehicle-inspection memory aid from the manual is allowed. Results are posted after 6 p.m. A passed test is amended at a DMV office onto a temporary CDL valid for 60 days, and the photo license is mailed.
DMV says a first CMV road test in a vehicle with an automatic transmission can add an E restriction, a vehicle with no air brakes can add an L restriction, and air-over-hydraulic brakes can add a Z restriction. Confirm the code that matches the truck you test in. An out-of-state CDL is surrendered at a DMV office. If it has hazmat, you take the New York hazmat knowledge test and give fingerprints for the federal and New York checks. Federal entry-level driver training still applies to a first Class A or B, some upgrades, and a first passenger, school bus, or hazmat endorsement. One Pass Prep is not on the Training Provider Registry. DMV also says its offices are temporarily not taking a CLP or CDL application from someone who is not a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident. Read the current page before you go. 49 CFR 383.135 sets the 80% knowledge-test floor the sets on this site use.

20 free questions in each endorsement. Answers stay hidden until you submit. The line on these sets is 80%, which is the written-test line in 49 CFR 383.135. A score here is not a pass rate. The counts on each card are the free set and the original questions in that section.
