Michigan · Department of State knowledge tests
160 free questions across 8 endorsements, 20 in each section. CDL Full Access is $19/month and opens the other 1640 questions, for every endorsement, not $10 each. Air brakes, combination, hazmat, tank, doubles, passenger, and school bus are included with general knowledge.
These are the Department of State application steps and the Michigan Commercial Driver License Manual, not a promise about how anyone scores. You need a current Michigan driver license. The skills test is given by an approved driver testing business, and the Department of State does not set that fee. Confirm the amount with the business. This site does not issue the permit.
The application page says the knowledge tests are written at a computer testing station and each one takes a minimum score of 80 percent. Michigan lists the classes as Group A, Group B, and Group C. Group A is 70 questions plus a 20-question combination test. Group B and Group C are 50 questions each. Doubles, passenger, school bus, and tank are 20 questions. Hazmat is 30. Air brakes are 25. You may take only one test per day from each category. Miss a knowledge test and you wait one day before the next try. The sets on this site use that 80% line. They are not Department of State forms, and this site does not publish a pass rate.
You pass the required knowledge tests and a vision test before a commercial learner permit is issued. After that you may drive with a CDL holder who is licensed for the vehicle. The Department of State says you practice at least 14 days, then schedule the skills test with an approved driver testing business. That appointment has to be at least two days before the day you are eligible. Skills-test results stay valid for one year. If you have not applied for the CDL in that year, the tests are taken again.
A CLP can be issued before entry-level driver training is finished. A first-time hazmat applicant finishes the hazmat portion of that training before the written test at a Secretary of State office. A first Class A or B, an upgrade, and a first passenger, school bus, or hazmat endorsement still need a provider on the Training Provider Registry before the test that training gates. One Pass Prep is not on that registry. This subscription is not an ELDT course and it does not replace the skills test. The Department of State also says that, under the federal rule effective September 29, 2025, it issues a CLP or CDL only when it can verify a legal-presence document on the application page. Read that list before you go.
The manual says the skills test is a vehicle inspection, basic control skills, and an on-road test, in that order. Fail a segment and the rest of that attempt stops. Credit for a segment you passed lasts until the CLP expires. Skip the air-brake knowledge test, or bring a truck without air brakes, and you are restricted from vehicles with air brakes. After you pass, you return to a Secretary of State office. The application page lists a $5 fee for each group endorsement and $9 to correct the standard license. Confirm both. A temporary permit covers the gap until the photo CDL is mailed.
One Pass Prep is not affiliated with the Michigan Department of State or FMCSA. This site does not issue a Michigan CLP or CDL.
20 free questions in each endorsement. Answers stay hidden until you submit. The line on these sets is 80%, which is the written-test line in 49 CFR 383.135. A score here is not a pass rate. The counts on each card are the free set and the original questions in that section.
