California · DMV knowledge tests
160 free questions across 8 endorsements, 20 in each section. CDL Full Access is $19/month and opens the other 280 starter questions, for every endorsement, not $10 each. Air brakes, combination, hazmat, tank, doubles, passenger, and school bus are included with general knowledge.
These are DMV’s application steps and the Commercial Driver Handbook, not a promise about how anyone scores. The application fee is nonrefundable and the application is valid for 12 months. Confirm the current fee and office rules before you go. This site does not issue a permit or a license.
DMV says a first CDL, or a class, endorsement, or restriction change that needs a skills test, starts with a commercial learner permit held at least 14 days. You need a California noncommercial Class C first. A temporary or interim Class C is acceptable. You pass the knowledge tests at a DMV office, and DMV issues the CLP after those tests. You have three attempts at each required knowledge test. Fail the same test three times and the application is no longer valid.
After the 14 days, you schedule a skills test. DMV does not give it as a walk-in. You bring the type of vehicle for the class you want. The test is a vehicle inspection, basic control skills, and a road test. Fail any part and the rest of that testing is postponed. You have three tries at the skills test, and a retest has a fee. Confirm the amount. The handbook says triple trailers are not legal in California. The doubles and triples set on this site is still the shared national bank.
The Commercial Driver Handbook says all skills tests are conducted in English and an interpreter is prohibited. The same handbook says commercial knowledge tests are available in English, Arabic, Chinese, Punjabi, Russian, and Spanish. Confirm the knowledge-test language with DMV before you go, because testing language has been changing. This site does not publish a pass rate.
DL 650 lists general knowledge for every applicant, then passenger, air brakes, combination, hazardous materials, tank, doubles and triples, and school bus, depending on the license. Hazmat still needs a TSA background check. The handbook also lists a firefighter endorsement. This starter bank does not cover that endorsement. Federal rules set an 80% floor on each knowledge test in 49 CFR 383.135. The sets here use that line. They are not DMV forms.
Entry-level driver training applies to a first-time Class A or B, to some upgrades, and to a first-time passenger, school bus, or hazmat endorsement. The state checks the Training Provider Registry. One Pass Prep is not on that registry. This subscription is not an ELDT course and it does not replace the skills test.
One Pass Prep is not affiliated with the California Department of Motor Vehicles or FMCSA. This site does not issue a California CLP or CDL.
20 free questions in each endorsement. Answers stay hidden until you submit. The line on these sets is 80%, which is the written-test line in 49 CFR 383.135. A score here is not a pass rate. The counts on each card are the free set and the original questions in that section.

The questions are original. They are written for the same topics the national manuals cover, which California uses. They are not DMV items. Mixed free practice pulls two free questions from each endorsement. All CDL states.
CDL subscription
CDL Full Access is $19/month flat. That price includes every CDL knowledge endorsement in this product: General Knowledge, Air Brakes, Combination, HazMat, Tanker, Doubles/Triples, Passenger, and School Bus. It is not $10 per endorsement. Cancel anytime.
The free section tests stay on the site. This subscription opens the rest of the starter bank for every endorsement listed above. It is saved in this browser for the current month. There is no email account.
This browser keeps one subscription at a time. Saving CDL Full Access replaces another pass already stored here. It does not stack subscriptions.
One Pass Prep is not affiliated with FMCSA, the California Department of Motor Vehicles, or any other state driver-license agency. It is not an ELDT provider and it is not listed on the Training Provider Registry.
